Buddhist Monks in Political Protests?

What's the deal with the Buddhist monks protesting in Myanmar?  I thought in Buddhism, desire was to be avoided.  Sounds like these Buddhist monks desire something.  Otherwise, they wouldn't be protesting.

Can someone please help me out with this?
