The Battle Hymn of the Republic

Reading the lyrics of some of our great patriotic songs reveals much about our union's history. With the "prayers" to Obama some schoolchildren are making these days, I thought it would be good to post these lyrics to the Battle Hymn of the Republic. For those of you raised in government schools and without Bible study: you may not get the full effect of these lyrics, which have allusions to Biblical concepts.

Enjoy!

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on."

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
While God is marching on.

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.

The 10 Big Lies About America by Michael Medved

I recently read The 10 Big Lies About America: Combating Destructive Distortions About Our Nation by Michael Medved.

Talk radio host, author, and media & culture critic Michael Medved has an encyclopedic knowledge and recall of American history and politics.  He is featured right here on Townhall.com.

His most recent book is the kind you can carry around with you or keep on your coffee table if you want to see the Leftists in your life go into fits.  Students should especially be given copies, although the corresponding rise in the blood pressure of instructors might be costly to health plans.

As the title implies, Medved tackles ten all-to-commonly-believed notions about the United States of American that crumble in when countered with the facts.

Here they are:

America Was Founded on Genocide Against Native Americans - Debunks the notion that a paradise of peaceful people were wiped out by an unprovoked and concerted genocidal effort on the part of colonists from Europe and their American descendants.  Possible Leftist response: Europeans were still wrong to invade the continent (but of course, it is okay for other people to invade now).

The United States is Uniquely Guilty for the Crime of Slavery, and Based Its Wealth on Stolen American Labor
- Points out that Americans deserve more credit for reducing slavery around the world than blame for perpetuating it; slavery was not a boon to the American economy.  Possible Leftist response: Americans were still wrong to engage in slavery and thus we still have a debt to pay.

The Founders Intended a Secular, Not Christian, Nation – Shows that the founders, while not intending a theocracy, saw this nation as a Christian one and did not separate faith, prayer, and religious activities from government proceedings, policies, and facilities the way today’s most ardent separationists insist is Constitutionally mandated.  (Medved is a observant Jew.)  Possible Leftist response: That was then, this is now.  Besides, those people were genocidal slavedrivers (see above).

America Has Always Been a Multicultural Society, Strengthened by Diversity – Points out that, unless you believe that one Christian denomination is an entirely different culture from another, America has been an assimilating nation, not a multicultural one for most of its existence, and multiculturalism has a dismal record around the world.  Possible Leftist Response: Current immigration trends necessitate multiculturalism.

The Power of Big Business Hurts the Country and Oppresses the People - Shows that big business has provided much more benefit to Americans than any harm, empowering the individual and helping to improve our quality of life.  Possible Leftist response: It isn't worth it because big business owners get richer than most of us, and that's not fair.

Government Programs Offer the Only Remedy for Economic Downturns and Poverty
– Shows that government programs actually make economic downturns worse and create more of a problem than they solve.  This is especially relevant right now!  Possible Leftist response: We can count on our government, which has the power of force, and in the past has been genocidal, racist, and a perpetuator of slavery (see above), to be less corrupt and better at handling things than a market that relies on freedom, personal choices, and voluntary interactions.

America Is an Imperialist Nation and a Constant Threat to World Peace
– Shows that while America has participated in many wars, it has been decidedly non-imperialist, especially in comparison to most of the world and has promoted peace.  Possible Leftist response: But we're too powerful, automatically making things unfair, just like when someone is really rich and I'm not.

The Two-Party System Is Broken, and We Urgently Need a Viable Third Party – Medved draws upon his keen understanding of political history to show that Democrats and Republican parties have changed over the years, while ideals being championed by third parties tend to make those ideals less prominent in the major parties instead of more prominent.  Possible response from third-party member: It doesn’t matter – the principle of purity matters more to me than winning.

A War on the Middle Class Means Less Comfort and Opportunity for the Average American – Demonstrates that quality of life has improved, and that people who leave the middle class are much more likely to do so by moving upwards than downwards.  Possible Leftist or protectionist response: I have it harder than my parents.  I mean, they didn't have to deal with where to place the big screen hi-def TV, or where to park all of the cars, or how to keep so many rooms clean.

America is in the Midst of an Irreversible Moral Decline – Demonstrates this notion goes back to the earliest days of the country, and that cultural indicators shift back and forth, instead of constantly declining.  Medved is optimistic.  This "lie" comes mostly from the Right, especially the Religious Right.  Those whose eschatology (the study of "last things" or end times) holds that the world as we know it will soon end after a dramatic increase in evil are likely to be unconvinced by Medved, though there are orthodox Christian theologians who do not believe a total moral collapse is destined to precede the "end of the world", or that we can’t have decades, centuries, or millennia yet ahead of us full of moral advancements and retreats.

All in all, it is a great book that I can strongly recommend.

John Mellencamp is Down on America

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and their freedom of speech.  Celebrities shouldn’t have to keep their opinions to themselves, but neither should they be considered experts with opinions more authoritative than our own unless they have relevant experience.  Artists, of course, should be expected to express their perspectives, thoughts, and feelings through their art.  We are free to support them or not.

The Los Angeles Times is running a few items dealing with celebrities and their public political involvements.  Staff writer Tina Daunt brings us some remarkable thinking by musician John Mellencamp.
He thinks Barack Obama is too conservative, and every time John McCain plays his songs at a rally, the Republican nominee gets a call from a Mellencamp rep: Play the music if you want, but you better know what the lyrics mean.

According to Mellencamp, the words mean this: The government is corrupt, the war is unjust, the middle class is sunk, people are starving, racism is rampant, and those little pink houses? Couldn't we do better for the working poor?
People are starving?  Have you looked around?  Even our “poor” are obese.  Only in places in the world where dictators and socialists reign is their starvation.  Racism is rampant?  Maybe, if you’re talking about all of the people voting for Obama because he is black.  Mr. Mellencamp, you are free to spend your money buying gifts for the poor.
"I have felt that the government has betrayed most people in turning their back on the working class." He said, "Deregulation has destroyed so many things that worked so well, destroyed the airlines, destroyed trucking, destroyed, as we see now, Wall Street.”
Guess what?  The more regulation and centralization of power, the more the few richest people will be able to control things.  That isn’t good for the “working class”.
"We've got to have guidelines, and strict guidelines, that are enforced by the government. That's the government's job. Now, their idea of making law is 'We're allowed to tap your phone, we're allowed to enter your house without a search and seizure.' That's wrong."
So, Mr. Mellencamp – when was the last time your house was raided?
"After every song in Boston, 20,000 people were going, 'USA, USA.' I thought, man. I almost asked them to stop, stop doing that. I don't like it. I don't like hearing that chant."

Wow.  This guy is ripe for teasing by David Zucker.
"If you're sick, you're on your own. If you lose your home, you're on your own. If you're out of a job, you're on your own."
What in the world is this guy talking about?  We have so many government programs – which we shouldn’t - to deal with these issues.  There are also charities and religious organizations and how about friends and family?  How about planning, saving, and insuring?  There's no place in the world where it is easier for anyone to succeed.

Please tell this guy was poorly misquoted.

I Saw 'An American Carol'

You should, too.  I have been a paid movie reviewer, but this isn’t going to be quite like my other reviews, because this is an openly political movie and I’m an openly political blogger.

People go to the movies to have an emotional experience.  That was what I saw an expert on screenwriting demonstrate when he went over the list of history’s top grossing films.  They weren’t all masterpieces in cinema, but the audience had an emotional experience while watching those films in the theater.

"An American Carol" is not a cinematic masterpiece, but it certainly did deliver an emotional experience.  I – like the rest of the audience – was laughing throughout the picture.  I was laughing so hard at times I was crying,

Then there was a sequence that brought tears to my eyes for another reason.
Jon Voight’s poignant and dead-serious portrayal of President George Washington led into a moment I did not expect.  It was a powerful and solemn moment in a movie that usually gets it point across with over-the-top silliness and slapstick.  Sometimes the film tickles, sometimes it delivers a noogie, and sometimes it swings and connects with a baseball bat.

As you probably know by now, the film plays on A Christmas Carol by having a character spoofing Michael Moore (Michael Malone, as played very well by Kevin Farley) visited first by JFK, then General Patton (Kelsey Grammer doing a bang-up performance through much of the film), President Washington, and the Angel of Death (country music star/Celebrity Apprentice stand-out Trace Adkins).  Through these encounters, Malone learns to appreciate America the need, at times, to go to war, including warring against Islamofascist terrorists.

Not only are we treated to a thorough slapdown (literally) of Moore, but a blistering portrayal of intolerant Leftist college professors, a derisive mocking of mindless mob protestors, a silly send-up of ACLU lawyers, and, of course, a poke to the eyes of terrorists.  Rosie O’Donnell even gets the kick in the rear, as does former President Jimmy Carter.  More importantly, though, our men and women in the military are portrayed as heroic.

I’ve always been a fan of good parody and satire, and David Zucker is one of the kings of bringing that to cinema, usually with a thorough dose of slapstick.  Zucker is in a good position to deliver this film.  Having long been part of the Hollywood game, he’s been steeped in the ideology and tactics of the Left.  However, his villains have often been Soviet Communists, Nazis, and Islamofascist terrorists, and over the years, seeing how the Left has treated Israel and has responded to 9/11, and how the Left has responded to his concerns, he was finally driven to make this film.

Zucker had already opened himself up to vitriol from the Left.  But the various other people part of this project are opening themselves up to all sorts of trouble from their Hollywood peers, and probably a few secretive “way to go!” encouragements from closeted Hollywood patriots.  Lord only knows the grief the extremely talented David Alan Grier is getting for his biting portrayal of a slave in the war-between-the-states-never-happened alternate reality.  Notice that the film is not playing on all that many screens, and was distributed by Vivendi (a minority owner of NBC Universal) instead of one of the major Hollywood studios.

Which brings me back to my suggestion that you go see this film in the theater.  Not only will it enhance your experience to hear strangers laughing along with you, but your dollar-vote will send a message to Hollywood.

Like I said, the film is not a masterpiece.  Some things could have been done better, but that’s true for most films.  I found some of the crude language unnecessary, but it wasn’t pervasive.  I would pay to see this film again, if for no other reason to catch some of the things I must have missed the first time around.  As is typical with Zucker, you have to keep your eyes open for quick sight gags that are often in the background, and the same goes for keeping your ears open for some of the auditory humor.  For example… listen closely for what the goosestepping Nazi soldiers are reciting.

"An American Carol" will not get good reviews from Leftists, who make up most of the Hollywood community.  But it is definitely worth seeing.

I Thank God I Was Born in the U.S.A.

People risk and lose their lives trying to get here.  People lie, cheat, and steal to get here and stay here.  Me, I was blessed to be born here, making me a citizen simply by surviving Roe v. Wade.

So many people sacrificed and fought and worked to create and build and preserve this nation, from the explorers who made the journeys across the Atlantic and had to turn around and make the journey back, to the pilgrims who colonized here, to the revolutionaries who broke away from the king and later set up the greatest Constitution in history, to the people who insisted that human beings should not be treated as property, to the people who went around the world to defeat Naziism and Soviet Communism.  I thank God they did.  I thank God my ancestors dared to come here.

I thank God I can choose my job, choose where to live, choose what to buy, choose my doctor, choose what to drive, choose to have as many children as I can, and openly worship Jesus Christ and study the Bible.

Our nation is not perfect, but it is the best place in the world, and it does have the ingredients for further greatness.  We must now implement the recipe to preserve and further that which is good and discard or change that which isn’t.  We must fight to make the government work to protect our rights instead of infringing on them.  We must work hard to raise the subsequent generations with the morals and values that aid in limiting government.

Our way of life is under attack – from enemies both foreign and domestic.

One way we can fight them is to declare our independence, and continue declaring it
- our independence from: being governed by those not operating under our Constitution; the failed promises of politicians; the failed and restrictive programs of the federal and state governments; the tyranny of the minority; the activist judiciary; socialist labor unions; academics who hate America; media with a Leftist bias or that degrades our culture; churches that have become lukewarm; family and “friends” who are sociopaths, malignant narcissists, unrepentant evildoers, or enabling cowards.

Pray.  Study the Bible, the Constitution, and history.  Go to church.  Get informed.  Tell others. Vote at the ballot and with your dollar. Stand between evildoers and the innocent.  Civilly disobey unjust laws, rulings, or orders.

Happy Independence Day and God Bless America!

What's Wrong With Questioning Patriotism?

It is big news that Obama says he will never question the patriotism of another.  This is supposed to pre-empt others from questioning his patriotism.  This is supposed to make him look like a nice guy.

I, however, want to know what is wrong with questioning the patriotism of another?  Why is it okay to question their competence, their judgment, their success, their political positions, their age, their allegiances - not their patriotism?  Why is that that sacred?  Why do people get a pass on that?  Would Obama really not question the patriotism of someone who, say, publicy burned American flags and called for the destruction of the country?  If he would not, then he is a fool.

Patriotism is important, especially for polticians.  Do you love your country, or are you more concerned with what Europeans think?  Do you want to serve because you think you have something to contribute in protecting the lives and property of others, or are you power hungry?

Those who are truly patriotic have nothing to fear in having their patriotism examined by another patriotic American.

The Religious Right & the Church/State Divide

I’m presenting a series here called Exposing the Religious Right.

The introduction/first installment is here.

The second installment, discussing the motivations/starting points of the RR is here.

The RR on the Church/State Divide and Patriotism

From the Traditional Values Coalition website:

We are advocates of religious freedom. We believe the First Amendment to our Constitution gives all of us the right to freely exercise our religious faith and that religious faith is the cornerstone of freedom in this nation. Our Founding Fathers supported religion, purchased Bibles, established congressional chaplains, and sent missionaries to witness to the Indians. They enacted the First Amendment to protect religious freedom, not to stifle it. We are opposed to any movement in this country that will strip away our constitutional rights to freedom of religion, speech, and association.

You’ve probably heard the RR referred to as “theocrats” and “theocons” akin to the Taliban, and that the RR is pushing dominionism and/or reconstructionism, seeking to forcibly institute a conservative form of Christianity as the official state religion and to pass all sorts of laws turning those outside of their inner circle into second class citizens and criminals.

I have not seen this to be typical of the RR.  I have not seen any significant RR organization advocate such ideas.  There are no doubt small, unorganized smatterings of those sorts mixed in with the RR crowd, but they are not normative.  They are considered the fringe by most of the RR and not taken very seriously.  There is a very simple test to see if someone could possibly believe in coercive dominionism or reconstructionism.  Do they talk about being on the lookout for “the Antichrist” and a “rapture” of Christians being imminent?  If so, those people are expecting the world to get worse and the government to fall under the control of their opponent any day now, and that certainly doesn’t line up with a belief that the whole country will be truly Christianized through their efforts.  There are other Christians that believe the whole world will be Christianized - voluntarily.

Either way, the RR is not seeking to eliminate the government/church divide.  Even dominionists foresee a voluntary adoption of active Christianity by the masses - thereby ushering in paradise on Earth.

Ironically, it is liberals who seek to force “Christian charity” and “social justice” via the government – social programs, welfare, living wage laws, taxation policies, outlawing “hate”, etc.

When the RR refers to the U.S. as a “Christian nation”, they are referencing the founding of then nation, the principles behind that founding, the traditions of the country, and the overwhelming professed religious designations with which the citizens self-identify.

The RR maintains that Christopher Columbus and later the original European colonists in the colonies that became the U.S. were Christians seeking to further Christendom, spread the Gospel, and live by Christian principles without being persecuted.  They point to the colonial governments, founding fathers, the Declaration of Independence, and things like the Northwest Ordinance to put the U.S. Constitution in such a context.

The U.S. Constitution, including most Amendments and especially the first ten, are wholeheartedly supported by the RR.  They support freedom of religion with the caveat that religious expression must fall within certain laws of our “Christian” nation.  For example, you can’t legally practice human sacrifice or prostitution (in most places), even if it is part of your religion.

The “Establishment Clause” in the Constitution is seen by the RR as a way to prevent the Federal government from making any particular denomination the official national religion or to interfere in churches (except to prosecute crime), with a mind to the situation in England with the Anglican Church. Based largely on history and earlier precedents, they do not agree that it mandates the removal of prayer, chaplains, or religious or theistic monuments, imagery, symbols, mottos, books, meetings, or language from government buildings, currency, the Pledge of Allegiance as recited in government proceedings, speeches, press conferences, or public discourse or events.

As such, the RR is against the removal of Ten Commandments monuments and crosses from public land and seals, and other ways of "secularizing" society.

Nor does the Establishment Clause, according to the RR, prevent tax money from being distributed to religious charities and social programs as long as tax money is going to any charities or social programs.  However, many RR organizations do not want to accept such funding, believing it will come with strings they do not want to accept.

The RR also tends to be very patriotic, with many of the people believing the U.S. is the greatest nation on earth and one with an exceptional responsibility.  Part of that manifests in wanting to “protect the flag”, and hence past support for an Amendment to ban flag burning.  Personally, I love this country and there have been some wonderful things done for humanity under our flag.  I think people who burn the flag are lowering themselves to the level of slime.  But I just can’t get all that passionate about spending resources on an attempt to pass an Amendment banning flag burning.  On the other hand, I can’t commit to thinking it should be protected free speech.  However, that is the current default.

You should note that Jehovah’s Witnesses and certain other morally conservative religious groups that might be perceived as part of the RR see the government, and all governments in the world, as part of a system that is inherently contrary to the will of God and believe that God (note - God, not them) will overthrow them all to establish His direct rule on Earth in the future, and because of this and related religious reasons, they will not serve in the military or pledge allegiance to the flag.  Mormons, on the contrary, obviously have nothing against voting, holding elected office, or serving in the military.  (Just for the record - I consider both of those groups to be pseudo-Christian cults that have a leadership that is misleading them.)

Speaking of the military, I will touch on the RR’s view of military defense as well as law enforcement, capital punishment, and gun ownership in my next post on the RR.

In conclusion for this post, I want to point out that the RR does not want to take away your freedom of religion, or force their religion on you.  The RR loves the U.S. and believes that the Constitution is largely inspired by - and thus compatible with – Biblical principles, so they do not want to do away with the Constitution.
