Obama Devotion Syndrome

A letter to the Los Angeles Times has prompted me to finally ask if we need to label this bizarre sycophantic condition that is popping up in some Americans.  Susan Harris of Glendale wrote:
Now that 14 people are dead from a rampage shooting in Binghamton, N.Y., can we do something about gun control in this country?
I agree.  There should be less gun control so more law-abiding Americans can arm themselves in more circumstances.  Someone could possibly have stopped this guy before he killed anyone, or before he killed as many.

...Hmmm.  Oh, wait.  I read ahead to the end of the letter, and I think Ms. Harris means she wants MORE gun control.  Yes, I think more laws may work.  I mean, the problem here was that this guy would have heeded laws against what he did if they existed, right?  If there had been more restrictive laws, he surely wouldn’' have done what he did.  We should outlaw murder while we are at it.

Nope, somehow that doesn’t wash with me.  I mean, it makes as much sense as banning all immigration because this involved and immigrant.  See this blog for much more on the gun control issue.

Ah, but that's not what really caught my eye about this letter.

As the letter writer notes, 13 people were murdered, and what is her concern?
We have an articulate, intelligent and dignified president who is abroad trying to do something about the tarnished image of this country. And how do we help him? By slaughtering each other?
Yes, her concern is that the 14 deaths may make Obama (who is "articulate"... and probably clean, too... and certainly "dignified", wrongly bowing down to foreign royalty)... look bad.

Before we do anything we must ask ourselves - how will this help President Obama look good?  Murdering maniacs should take a break until Obama is out of office.  It was okay to run around murdering people when Bush was President, but those days are over, now that we have an articulate teleprompter reader.

What can we call this?  Obama Devotion Syndrome?  You may have noticed that it is more likely to be found in those who have displayed Bush Derangement Syndrome.  I say we use endangered animals in experiments to find cures for this.  We need human Embryonic Stem Cells for other research.

Score Another One For Grandma

Nothing like a handgun to keep a criminal from making you a victim.
An 85-year-old woman boldly went for her gun and busted a would-be burglar inside her home, then forced him to call police while she kept him in her sights, police said.
She should have rapped his knuckles, too.
"I just walked right on past him to the bedroom and got my gun," Leda Smith said.
What would she have done if she had lived under gun control?
After the 17-year-old boy called 911, Smith kept holding the gun on him until state police arrived at her home in Springhill Township, about 45 miles south of Pittsburgh.
Good for her.  Let’s see what AARP does with her.

NRA Spy Infiltrated Gun-Control Groups?

What are the chances of seeing a positive Hollywood portrayal of this?  I'm sure we would if the allegation was of a n envirowhacko infiltrating a chemical engineering or petroluem company, or an anti-smoking crusader infiltrating a tobacco company, or some Leftist infiltrating any conservative interest group.

I hope we can get the Leftist activists looking at each other with suspicion.  I can see it now: “Hmmm, he seems crazier than usual and said something even I think it stupid during that press conference.  Is he a mole?”

LA Mayor Avoids Using Starter Pistol

Los Angeles Mayor Tony Villar apparently didn't want to be photographed holding a starter pistol at a swimming pool publicity event.  You know, because someone might mistake him for a law enforcement officer, or something, and who would want that?

He has no problem being photographed speaking encouraging words to crowds of illegal aliens exercising protest rights we would not enjoy in their country, or making a mockery of marriage.  Ah, but being photographed with a useful and legal tool - can't have that!

Congrats to Joe Horn of Texas

Congrats are in order for Joe Horn and the people of Texas for doing the right thing.  Let all home-invaders be warned.  Property rights are worthless if you can't defend your property, or have your neighbor do it in your stead.

The Religious Right on Defense, Law Enforcement, and More

I’m presenting a series here called Exposing the Religious Right.

The introduction/first installment is here.

The second installment, discussing the motivations/starting points of the RR is here.

The Religious Right on Defense, Law Enforcement, Capital Punishment, & Gun Ownership

The RR believes that we are obligated to defend ourselves from attack, with force if necessary.  A husband is obligated to defend his wife and kids (and to defend himself so that he can continue to protect them).  Collectively, we are obligated to protect ourselves through law enforcement and militarily force.  Therefore, the RR tends to respect and support a strong military (including most military actions/war efforts) and law enforcement personnel.

Some in the RR have expressed disagreements with some approved actions by Federal law enforcement agencies, however.  Examples of this include the “Waco” and “Ruby Ridge” incidents.  The RR is not united in these opinions.

Indeed, many in the RR are wary of the Federal government having too much power and becoming oppressive, and so promote gun ownership, perceiving that an armed populace is less likely to be oppressed.

Mostly, however, the RR support for gun ownership has to do with the Second Amendment, self-defense, and family defense from criminals.  Most people in the RR do not have a moral problem with hunting, either, even if they do not do it themselves.

Perhaps one of the areas where the RR is least unified is capital punishment.  Churches such as the Roman Catholic Church are officially against it, others join in on “pro-life” grounds, and others in the RR may agree with capital punishment in principle, but think our government may be too flawed or corrupted to be trusted with properly implementing capital punishment.  Capital punishment supporters in the RR do not see it as being in conflict with their pro-life convictions, because they maintain the criminal’s actions warrant the punishment and that executing those criminals protects innocents from further threat from those criminals.

The underlying principles the RR employs in this area is that it is okay to use force to defend your life, the lives of other innocents, your country, and law & order.
