Prince William Cares

He really, really cares! How do we know? Well, as Associated Press writer Jennifer Quinn reports, he spent a night on London streets to "highlight the plight of homeless British teenagers". Symbolism over substance you say? You're such a cynic!
He spent a chilly night near Blackfriars Bridge last week with Seyi Obakin, the chief executive of British homeless charity Centrepoint. William has been the charity's patron since 2005.
That is what matters. Giving, and encouraging others to do so - as long as the charity makes good use of the funds.
"I cannot, after one night, even begin to imagine what it must be like to sleep rough on London's streets night after night," William said Tuesday.
No, you can't, which is why it is ridiculous. Hanging out overnight for one with a friend and the news media and all of the lights and security, knowing full well that the next night you can party in exclusive Paris venues and sleep in a palace, does not compare to spending night after night on the streets, not seeing a way to get out of it.
Obakin said they found a secluded spot - tucked away behind some garbage bins - and settled in for a restless night.

"But there was no shielding from the bitter cold, or the hard concrete floor, or the fear of being accosted by drug dealers, pimps or those out to give homeless people a 'good' kicking," Obakin said.
Get real. Look, I'm assuming the guy means well. But like I said, there are more productive ways to contribute, such as fundraising.

Homeless teens are a different category from people who become homeless as mature adults. Unfortunately, in some places, even as teens they can't be compelled to get the right help, and if they have public property where they can hang out without being arrested, they are unlikely to seek it  on their own.

Seeking Weddings, Not Marriage

Joan Frawley Desmond has a piece titled "Same-Sex Marriage: In-Laws Optional?", in which she notes that bride+groom couples who are overly showy and focused on the wedding ceremony don't seem to have long, happy marriages.  She ties this in to the push to neuter marriage.  My comments are over at The Opine Editorials.  I promise this is the last time I will direct you over there... today.  I just couldn't resist doing another post that would end up on the "cotton swab news" website.

West Hollywood Whining

Symbolism over substance rears its head in the San Francisco of SoCal.  Lefty marriage neutering advocates want a new West Hollywood hotel to "disaffiliate" itself with a corporate cousin, because that cousin is on property owned by someone who actually supported the California Marriage Amendment.  Read about it over at The Opine Editorials.

The Government Show

You shouldn’t be surprised to hear that some things government entities do is purely for show – symbolism over substance; a good visual; a dog and pony show.  Los Angeles Times staff writers Julie Cart and Bettina Boxall start off their piece using Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter as an example, but this kind of thing is pervasive in all levels of government, regardless of political party.  Heck, most City Council and County Board of Supervisors meetings are full of what amounts to pure theater.

Why is this so?  Well, often it is because elected officials want to call attention to what they are doing, and divert attention away from what they aren’t doing or what they are doing that they don’t want you to notice.

There are people in government agencies working hard to do something as simple as deliver safe water reliably to your home faucet and take the wastewater from your toilet away, but unless they put on a show, you will rarely, if ever, notice their work.  You take their work for granted.  Firefighters are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but you really don’t think about it unless an alarm goes off or there is a traffic accident or you need to call 911.

Then there is the news media, which is hungry for images, sounds, and statements.  Why?  Because it is what we, the people, want.  We want to know that “something is being done.”  So much of what is being done is taking place in cubicles and conference rooms.  But that is boring.

Yes, politicians often pull rank and order something out of the ordinary, even if it won’t be effective.  But sometimes it is effective – it just won’t happen without a lot of red tape, time, and money – unless a politician pulls rank.  Most politicians have no way of knowing which is the case, and so they give the order because they’d rather err by doing too much (even if it really doesn’t do anything but spend money) than doing too little.  The subject matter experts might protest that it will be a waste, and usually they are right, but sometimes it is just a matter of it being a complicated mess to work out.

Expect to see a lot more show from the White House if Obama is living in it.

LA Mayor Avoids Using Starter Pistol

Los Angeles Mayor Tony Villar apparently didn't want to be photographed holding a starter pistol at a swimming pool publicity event.  You know, because someone might mistake him for a law enforcement officer, or something, and who would want that?

He has no problem being photographed speaking encouraging words to crowds of illegal aliens exercising protest rights we would not enjoy in their country, or making a mockery of marriage.  Ah, but being photographed with a useful and legal tool - can't have that!
